Phoebe Cope: New Work6 windmill Row, Kennington, London SE11 5DW Tuesday 18th May – 22 June open daily or by appointment www.phoebecope.com

Just opposite Pizza Express in Kennington, a bay window on street level presents an eye-boggling scene. In this recent painting by Phoebe Cope, greats from the National Gallery are pictured on red walls, whose cornice turns into an attic roof, which is topped by a glass dome. In the centre, a cat-eyed girl sits cross-legged, unfussed by the cornucopia around her – saplings, a bust of Shakespeare, an enormous classical sculpture walking off stage left. 6 Windmill Row is the artist’s home as well as her exhibition space, and inside, from floor to ceiling it is covered in canvases, interspersed with mirrors, dining table, sofa, coat hooks, and a kitchen. On show within this intimate context are Cope’s new works, her interiors of the mind. Cope might take the family drawing room as a starting point, or a courtyard in Kensington Palace, or an Indian mountainside, but these will become something new, superimposed with all sorts other things seen and experiences. It is a defiant, baroque jumble of curiosities and experiences. Alongside these are Cope’s ongoing series of pastel portraits of friends and acquaintances, drawn from life and life-size, but unfurling as an imagined line-up. The next open house evening is being held to mark the close of the exhibition, and features a special programme of short films by artists including Savvas Papasavva, Craig Kao and Mia Pfeifer and choreographer Katia Lom.

Brilliant work, well done phoebe.
