Karen Haller: BRIGHT THINKING

With all this glorious summer sunshine, here are a few quick and simple ways to bring this wonderful light into your home.

The most perfect light to bring into a room is natural light. Throw open the curtains and let the light flood in.

If you have a room without windows such as a bathroom, this needn’t be a reason for not having a bright, light room.  Think about installing a sunpipe, which allows natural light to flood in even on a cloudy day.  Sources: www.sunpipe.com, www.ripple.ltd.uk.   The next best thing to natural light is to use daylight blubs which mimic as closely as possible the qualities of natural light.

Equally, light can be brought into the room with the use of colour.  Look for hues that are at the lighter end of the colour palette whether that is a tint, tone or shade.

Mirrors are a really simple yet effective way to increase the level of light.
They reflect light back into a room, creating the illusion of space.

Not only do we feel energised and healthy living with natural light, it’s also a great way to reduce our electricity bills as well as being kind to our planet.

Enjoy basking in the light x

Hi Karen, great article…. I’m soon to be decorating my bathroom – we currently have it with a small room & door for the toilet and a bathroom with the bath and sink in! – basically I’m completely stuck on tile choice for a modern look. Any suggestions?

    Hi Tina,

The great thing about interiors these days there are so many products available that we not all shoe horned into one look anymore.

If you are after a modern look, think first about what modern means to you as everyone will have their own take on it. How do you want to feel when you are in the bathroom? Is it a bathroom for lingering in and taking long baths or perhaps you want a bathroom that ‘wakes you up’ in the morning? The mood and feel will relate to the colours you choose. For example white will give a very functional, clean, austere feel whereas blues and greens will gently wake up the body and mind.

When it comes to tiles again anything goes. Take a look at Ripples http://www.ripples.ltd.uk/bathrooms.html which show how large tiles and mosaics, etc look in situ. Then there’s Surface Tiles http://www.surfacetiles.com/new_site/our_products.html which have the most stunning range. If on a tight budget look at Topps Tiles http://www.toppstiles.co.uk/. They usually have great special offers.

When buying your tiles look for ones that have the colour running through the entire tile, otherwise you’ll see the colour difference and you’ll be edging each angle with tile trim which isn’t necessarily a modern look.

I hope this has been of help to you.

    All the best,
    Karen x
