Must See film: Inception

Article by Rachel Smith

Christopher Nolan’s new blockbuster Inception is THE must-see movie of the year. The imagination and intellect which went into creating this film is pure inspiration, where the mind really is the scene of the crime. Fabulous performances from Oscar Nominee Leonardo DiCaprio (Titanic, Blood Diamond) and Ellen Page (Juno, Hard Candy) left the audience astounded.

DiCaprio plays Cobb, an expert in dream extraction or ‘Inception’, a technological advancement which enables him to steal information from people’s dreams. Cobb is living in exile and agrees to engage in a highly dangerous mission to plant an idea in someone’s mind undetected, with the promise of being reunited with his family should he prove successful. The resultant team which is assembled includes Joseph Gordon-Levitt; Tom Hardy and Ellen Page who plays the architect assigned the task of creating the dream world in which the subject then fills with their mind.

The complexity of the plot, however, does not leave you feeling confused and lost due to the skill with which Nolan presents it. Sci-fi buffs will notice similarities between Inception and The Matrix; they both involve their characters questioning reality as well as gravity defying action sequences, however they differ in many more ways. The Matrix (1999) (the first one) leaves the viewer satisfied with the presentation of the alternate reality whereas Inception’s ending provokes yet more questions.

Nolan’s non-linear style of directing, most apparent in Memento (2000), also contributes in developing the plot in an interesting fashion. Inception is bound to attract multiple award nominations for the director/producer and its impressive cast. This fast paced, imaginative thriller, which absolutely must be experienced on the big screen, is taking the world by storm. So don’t miss out!
