1. Marie Antoinette- Sofia Coppola’s incredibly beautiful period drama is given a twist by this contemporary/New Romantic soundtrack including The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees,New Order and even The Strokes.
2. The OC- surprisingly, where the indie things are. The show hosted and launched artists The Killers,Rooney and Death Cab for Cutie, and the Beastie Boys had them showcase their single “Ch-check it out”.
3. 500 Days of Summer- Regina Spector’s “Us” opens and sets the tone for this story of all love stories, with a bit of The Smiths too. A couple of songs by Zooey Deschanel show us how she can be lovely as a singer just as she is as an actress.
4. Grey’s Anatomy- some more good old indie, the soundtrack mixes delicate and energetic, reflexive and fun with Jem, Kate Nash and Paolo Nutini. The medical show that launched The Fray and made Snow Patrol famous is a joy to watch and to listen too.
5. Eclipse- Dark and moving, just like the novels and the film. Florence + the machine gives us a new beautiful song, Vampire Weekend get less cheery but still enjoyable, Muse renew their presence in The Twilight Saga.
6. Moulin Rouge- Nicole Kidman and Ewan MacGregor wowed everyone showing how good they were at singing, and Baz Luhrmann surprised by mixing Kiss, U2, David Bowie and Whitney Houston all in one song and by turning “Roxanne” in the sexiest tango.
7. Where the wild things are- Karen O, frontwoman of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs goes solo for a lovely and childlike childhood fantasy.
8. The time traveler’s wife- beautiful instrumental music to carry the romantic tone of the movie and an excellent cover of Joy Division’s “Love will tear us apart” by Broken Social Scene.
9. Dan in real life- this bittersweet comedy starring Steve Carell and Juliette Binoche is made even nicer by Sondre Lerche’s cheerfully delicate tones. A really funny duet with Regina Spektor and “Fever” covered by A Fine Frenzy make this a little known jewel.
10. Sex and the City 2- Fun and fearless, just like the four girls the movie stars: the album contains gems like Dido’s new song “Everything to lose”, Beyonce’s “Single Ladies” covered by the great Liza Minelli, the unmissable New York anthem by Alicia Keys “Empire State of Mind Part II” and even Alicia covering Blondie’s “Rapture”.
