Simple Hair Saving Q&A

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

What’s the best way to combat/repair chemical damage?

The use of conditioning shampoos and protein rich products regularly is a god sent to those of us with damaged hair it can also help to improve the appearance of frizzy hair. I recommend two-in-one shampoos that remove unwanted oil, clean the hair and conditions it .

Dimethicone, is your friend here, it has been known to: decrease static electricity, increase shine, and improve manageability.

Can the sun damage hair?

Hair like skin can get tanned and damaged exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun should be avoided as it weakens hair structurally resulting in breakage or even loss.

A hat or an umbrella is the best form of protection however this can sometimes feel a little extreme, luckily there are plenty of products on the market that now contain sun protection formulas.

Can blow-drying my hair result in damage?

Quite simply yes, water in hair is what makes it flexible. Heating the hair to unnatural temperatures boils the water within the shafts of the hair, this in turn creates bubbles on the hairs shaft weakening the cuticle. Look out for the key signs of heat damage: burnt smell, frizzy ends and breakage.

I recommend air drying hair whenever possible to minimize damage, if you must use a hairdryer use it on  the lowest setting, this might take a little longer but is far less damaging to the hair. A golden rule to remember is to moisturize regularly.

HAIR: This Seasons Trends

Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

This season we are still looking back to the style icons of the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s .There is a revival of glamour with greater emphasis on condition, colour, texture and movement.

From sleek weaves to tousled up-styles, as always ‘bigger is better’.

For shorter styles we are seeing statement haircuts with sharp contours and bold fringes.

Colour and condition are a must this season, go for multi-tonal colour to enhance texture and movement. For those of us that are little more adventurous look to strong vibrant reds and rich coppers.

Men

We are seeing a range of styles from rockabilly to more classic shapes. Short at the sides with length on top, worn sleek or tousled-think James Dean. More and more men these days are prepared to experiment with their hair and the products to achieve the look.

Questions & Answers

Q. My hair is long and wavy and I always straighten it, what can I do to give my locks a sexier look?

A. You can create a sexier look by getting your stylist to blow-dry it curly to create a sexy Kim Kardashian look, at home try using GHD’s or hot rollers- remember by doing this you won’t have to blow-dry first.

Q. I am a male and I would like to do something different with my hair whilst keeping it current.

A. This means bringing it back to the sixties and keeping it heavier on top and short on the sides. Alternatively you can go longer for more of a James Dean look which is so versatile with fashion right now.

The only rule you need to adhere to here is to sweep your hair forward and your away the rest is just details.  From the cut of the top to the length of the sides do whatever best suits you.

Rockabilly hairstyle

It’s a look that’s featured among the fashionable elite for years now, like 2 whole years which is a heck of a long time where hair style is concerned. The great thing about this look is it suits almost all hair types. Probably the best thing about this look is you can be assured its cool, it’s been up and coming for years now but hasn’t peaked. 2012 I’m sure is going to be the year of the rockabilly.

3 winter hair solutions

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

This month at MAC’s we have been inundated with your winter hair dilemmas, so this month we dedicated our Hair Experts page to solving these common seasonal hair complaints and getting to the root of the problem.

1. Winter-Induced Frizz

This time of year the air is cold and dry with high amounts of static electricity which causes hair to spread, fly away, twist and dare I say frizz. invest in a hydrating, smoothing shampoo and conditioner and apply a silicone based finishing product  to seal in moisture. Don’t over style your hair too much artificial heat causes cuticle damage and frizz, frizz, frizz . Remember If all else fails a festive hat can always be called upon.

2. Dry  Itchy Scalp

As the temperatures outside plummet your likely switch up your central heating, this can strip skin cells of their natural moisture especially that on your scalp. Let the only powder on your shoulders be of snow this winter by investing in shampoo with tea tree oil. A recent study has revealed  that shampoo with 5% standardized tea tree oil can improve dandruff and itchiness in 41% of people. Remember  If all else fails a festive hat can always be called upon.

3. Lacklustre Locks

Boost your  lifeless locks by concealing a miniature-sized root-boosting moose in your handbag, ready  for when you need an on-the-go lift.  A texturizing paste can be called upon to  add thickness at the roots. Lastly, if you’re in an emergency situation and really need to breathe life back into your hair, use three to five Velcro rollers on the front and top parts of your hair in the morning for at least 30 minutes.  Remember If all else fails a festive hat can always be called upon.

The equestrian pony tail

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

This look is coming in style as an extension to last season’s equestrian look. It is an exceptional look as it is really easy to achieve and it is still would go with any look you are trying to pull off.

The best is to continue the equestrian theme this winter and follow with boots, a quilted barn jacket and a knitted jumper. Marc Jacobs had it all over the run way for autumn/winter 2011/2012.

There are so many ways to wear this style from a high pony in the centre of the head to a low and loose pony for a messed up look. A top tip is to have a piece of hair wrapped up around the hair band so it is not visible and the style looks well put together.

The equestrian look is one that can be pulled off oh so easily and it can look good on anyone so why not have a go and be right on trend for 2012.

Grab hold of a innovation in hair spray namely Air control. This flexible long lasting spray suites all hair types, its hold is derived from pine resin and certified organic flaxseed. The fantastic aroma is comprised of nutmeg, clove bud, vetiver, patchouli, bergamot and lemon oils which never overpowers . The formula uses a revolutionary water free formula to leave hair soft and touchable. Air Control hair spray works so well you can use it sparingly and still achieve great results for a hold that is never heavy.

Men’s beards

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

The New Year has come and this time of year is quite cold so beards are back and sexier than ever.

Ryan Gosling, Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal to name a few have made this look hot and on trend for these cold winter months. Sales of razor blades have gone down and men have reverted to that a fuzzier look for this winter.

This will take give you some much more time to concentrate on other things like a lay in the morning, some extra morning love with the Mrs, or just some time to catch yesterdays score in the morning news.

Not to get confused the modern day beard is not as easy to maintain as you might expect. It is easy to forget that there is still skin under there and it needs looking after, also you need to avoid ‘dandruff’ or flakes on your beard that come from dried up skin.

A daily routine should still take place with a facial scrub around the whole face (including beard) along with a facial wash and a good moisturiser. This symbolic representation on manhood is this season’s biggest statement and should be looked after.

There are a lot of products in the market especially for the beard aficionado that won’t break the bank.

Jenulence natural beard shampoo £18.00

Professor Edward Fuzzworthy’s gentleman’s organic beard care £14.00

Frank’s Beard Elixir (Mr Natty) £7.00

The Pixie crop goes rock!!

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

The short boy look gets a make over for 2012! The new adaptation of the pixie cut is right on trend this season and it has already been massive influence on the catwalks of a lot of designers so this is your hot ticket to stardom!

The most shocking and adventurous part of the cut is the really short fringe. This is what will distinguish the fashion followers with the fashionistas.

To pull of this look think “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” the sexy Hollywood remake has awoken our inner rock chick and gotten us to widely agree that rock chick has never really gone away from our sights, so Rock will always be cool in our books. The beauty of this style is that you can have any hair colour and it would only add to the drama to the cut and make it unique. Originally it should be worn with dark hair but the contrast of colour and the sharp cut of the fringe will make a different statement on its own. Have fun this one girls!

Beards

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

In the wake of Movember Moustaches have got a lot of publicity and rightly so but let’s not forget about the  rest of the hair growing head.  It’s getting colder now so really there isn’t a better time to consider growing a beard, not only as  a great fashion accessory but also as a practical heat retainer. Make no mistake growing a beard is a full time commitment,  you will face many challenges on your path to achieving a full beard and at the temptation to shave will be great. Determination is the name of the game,  beards especially semi formed, work-in-progress beards  connote a degree of creepiness but you have to get past this stage . I lament that we live in an age that  abhors facial hair, when just decades ago you could don a beard with pride.

Here are some top beard accoutrements to make your journey to a fully fledged beard  that little bit easier:

1. Wahl 9854-802 Lithium Ion Professional Grooming Kit

Just because you are growing a itchy and sore beard dosent mean you should leave it to its own devices, that is unless your going for that antartic explore look. So get yourself a beard trimmer Like this Wahl 9854 802 Lithium Ion Professinal, its got more add-onns than you can shake a stick  at, so for maximum beard versatility you can’t go wrong.

2.Ultra Beard Shampoo by Beardlsley

Beardsley’s mild-flavoured botanical formula makes it a pleasure for a man to wash his beard as often and as thoroughly as he likes.  This apparently isn’t quite as foul tasting as normal shampoo and is specifically formulated for beard hair, win win. A must have for any beard aficionado.

3. GB Kent A81T Small Moustache and Beard Comb

The beard or moustache comb is often regarded as a novelty but this is indeed a fallacy. Have you ever tried to brush a beard with a regular sized comb, you feel ridiculous. I wouldn’t wish that kind of embarrassment on my enemies so a miniature comb for your beard and tash is a must have.

Camilla Belle looks absolutely stunning here with her side-parted up-do and this is a perfect, practical hairstyle for Christmas dos.

Probably the simplest of styles yet it was seen on several catwalks this season.

Kate moss was seen at Louis Vuitton with her hair scraped back in a loose ponytail.

Dip Dye roots

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

One of the hottest trends of the late summer is now making its way into our winter collections too.

Dip dyed roots basically means starting your hair at one colour and then gradually fading the colour to a different one at the tips.  There was a time when showing your roots meant that you couldn’t afford to re-dye your hair and meant the look was considered cheap and tacky, but no longer. Designers and Celebs alike have brought the dare to bare your roots style back into fashion and we love it!

If you like subtle styles then take inspiration from Alexa Chung and Rachel Bilson who work this look in with natural highlights.

However if you’re feeling really brave then why not make a statement with some iconic bright colours!

I love this look not only because it’s so on trend and looks amazing, but also because it’s quite low maintenance colour wise. Once you have the effect put in you can let your hair grow out quite a lot before you have to go back to your stylist for a re-do. So this look is not only fashionable, but economical too!

I must give one piece of advice though, unless you are truly edgey I would say to stay away from block colours and fade your hair gradually, even with a crazy colour this still creates a nice subtle look.

If I was you, I would avoid this…

But maybe that’s just me. What are your thoughts on this season’s must have style? Let us know below!
