Men’s beards

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

The New Year has come and this time of year is quite cold so beards are back and sexier than ever.

Ryan Gosling, Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal to name a few have made this look hot and on trend for these cold winter months. Sales of razor blades have gone down and men have reverted to that a fuzzier look for this winter.

This will take give you some much more time to concentrate on other things like a lay in the morning, some extra morning love with the Mrs, or just some time to catch yesterdays score in the morning news.

Not to get confused the modern day beard is not as easy to maintain as you might expect. It is easy to forget that there is still skin under there and it needs looking after, also you need to avoid ‘dandruff’ or flakes on your beard that come from dried up skin.

A daily routine should still take place with a facial scrub around the whole face (including beard) along with a facial wash and a good moisturiser. This symbolic representation on manhood is this season’s biggest statement and should be looked after.

There are a lot of products in the market especially for the beard aficionado that won’t break the bank.

Jenulence natural beard shampoo £18.00

Professor Edward Fuzzworthy’s gentleman’s organic beard care £14.00

Frank’s Beard Elixir (Mr Natty) £7.00

The Pixie crop goes rock!!

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

The short boy look gets a make over for 2012! The new adaptation of the pixie cut is right on trend this season and it has already been massive influence on the catwalks of a lot of designers so this is your hot ticket to stardom!

The most shocking and adventurous part of the cut is the really short fringe. This is what will distinguish the fashion followers with the fashionistas.

To pull of this look think “Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” the sexy Hollywood remake has awoken our inner rock chick and gotten us to widely agree that rock chick has never really gone away from our sights, so Rock will always be cool in our books. The beauty of this style is that you can have any hair colour and it would only add to the drama to the cut and make it unique. Originally it should be worn with dark hair but the contrast of colour and the sharp cut of the fringe will make a different statement on its own. Have fun this one girls!

Beards

Sunday, January 1st, 2012

In the wake of Movember Moustaches have got a lot of publicity and rightly so but let’s not forget about the  rest of the hair growing head.  It’s getting colder now so really there isn’t a better time to consider growing a beard, not only as  a great fashion accessory but also as a practical heat retainer. Make no mistake growing a beard is a full time commitment,  you will face many challenges on your path to achieving a full beard and at the temptation to shave will be great. Determination is the name of the game,  beards especially semi formed, work-in-progress beards  connote a degree of creepiness but you have to get past this stage . I lament that we live in an age that  abhors facial hair, when just decades ago you could don a beard with pride.

Here are some top beard accoutrements to make your journey to a fully fledged beard  that little bit easier:

1. Wahl 9854-802 Lithium Ion Professional Grooming Kit

Just because you are growing a itchy and sore beard dosent mean you should leave it to its own devices, that is unless your going for that antartic explore look. So get yourself a beard trimmer Like this Wahl 9854 802 Lithium Ion Professinal, its got more add-onns than you can shake a stick  at, so for maximum beard versatility you can’t go wrong.

2.Ultra Beard Shampoo by Beardlsley

Beardsley’s mild-flavoured botanical formula makes it a pleasure for a man to wash his beard as often and as thoroughly as he likes.  This apparently isn’t quite as foul tasting as normal shampoo and is specifically formulated for beard hair, win win. A must have for any beard aficionado.

3. GB Kent A81T Small Moustache and Beard Comb

The beard or moustache comb is often regarded as a novelty but this is indeed a fallacy. Have you ever tried to brush a beard with a regular sized comb, you feel ridiculous. I wouldn’t wish that kind of embarrassment on my enemies so a miniature comb for your beard and tash is a must have.

Article by Susmi Patel

‘Side’ hairstyles are a significant trend this season, and because it’s Christmas soon, here’s a selection of the very best side hair trends and styles for December!

Side-Plait

We love Beyonce. Everybody loves Beyonce. So take a leaf out of her book and sport the Side-Plait hairstyle with a super-glam outfit- like in this picture – to party the night away this Christmas!

Beyonce’s Side-Plait compliments her simple and natural make-up choices, which includes lightly blushed cheeks, a light eye shadow base and a pink lip-gloss.

The hairstyle looks even more fab with her ombre’d hair so the style is making the best out of both colours of her hair.

Beyonce’s choice of a side-fringe makes the overall look a lot more trendy and chic.

Who knew that such a simple style would make you feel just like a star?

Side-Parting

Camilla Belle looks absolutely stunning here with her side-parted up-do and this is a perfect, practical hairstyle for Christmas dos.

Up-dos and buns are associated with elegance, so choosing a side parting can alternate the look to suit your own style.

A side parting can add a sparkling touch of glamour to anyone’s hairstyle, and will grant you a Red Carpet look in minutes!

Camilla’s choice of a fuchsia coloured lipstick adds femininity to her overall look and makes her look quite sophisticated.

Dip Dye roots

Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

One of the hottest trends of the late summer is now making its way into our winter collections too.

Dip dyed roots basically means starting your hair at one colour and then gradually fading the colour to a different one at the tips.  There was a time when showing your roots meant that you couldn’t afford to re-dye your hair and meant the look was considered cheap and tacky, but no longer. Designers and Celebs alike have brought the dare to bare your roots style back into fashion and we love it!

If you like subtle styles then take inspiration from Alexa Chung and Rachel Bilson who work this look in with natural highlights.

However if you’re feeling really brave then why not make a statement with some iconic bright colours!

I love this look not only because it’s so on trend and looks amazing, but also because it’s quite low maintenance colour wise. Once you have the effect put in you can let your hair grow out quite a lot before you have to go back to your stylist for a re-do. So this look is not only fashionable, but economical too!

I must give one piece of advice though, unless you are truly edgey I would say to stay away from block colours and fade your hair gradually, even with a crazy colour this still creates a nice subtle look.

If I was you, I would avoid this…

But maybe that’s just me. What are your thoughts on this season’s must have style? Let us know below!

HAIR Q&A

Saturday, October 8th, 2011

I’ve got a friend’s wedding coming up and would love to have a statement piece in my hair. I’ve spent quite a lot on my dress so I’m looking for something not too expensive that will still look sophisticated. What accessories would you recommend? – Nothing too big either!

There are many ways to liven up your haor, practice some twists and plaits and play around. For example one easy style is to part your hair in the middle, just in front grab the front section up to the ear and twist each side back, pin thwm up and you have an easy half -up updo. Once you have done this just try different things like a plait just on one side etc….

I’ve been dying my dark brown hair a deep black for years now, but I’ve decided it’s time for a change. How can I lighten my hair without having to strip my colour back first?

well if you are very unsure, the one frindge which suits most face shapes would be the side frindge. A full fringe on the other hand would mostly suit oval face shapes, although if you are unsure, I would recomend for you to start with a thin fringe with soft longer sides, if you like it just keep adding more thickness and sharpness to it slowly.
My hair is very and scalp are very flakey, I hate wearing black clothes because it always shows and it’s embarising. Do you have any suggestions?

Choosing the right shampoo is the best option. Our recomdendation would be kerastse Bain Gommage. It’s a gentle anti-dandruff shampoo with the right amount of zink which will not irritate your scalp.

My hair is so greasy I have to wash it every day, sometimes twice a day if i’m going out in the evening! i’m not sure what I can do to fix it, can you help?

When having an oily scalp you need to wash your hair with the right sampoo, one of the best ones would be kerastse Bain Clarifont make sure you use with warm water not hot water try not to be to rough but gentle circular movements on scalp.

The ‘Bob’ trend for Autumn/Winter 2011

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

Bobs have been the No.1 ‘It’ style for 2011, and the trend has just got hotter this Autumn!

A bob is available in a huge variety of styles, which can range from Angled Bobs, to Chin Bobs. And with lots of fantastic celebrities showing off this hairstyle too, you can’t put a foot wrong with this fabulous, classic trend!

Keira Knightley:

Keira’s bob is edgy and chic as she creates soft, subtle bangs by adding waves, as well as a side fringe. The waves make her style resemble a messy bob, and allows more of her face to be covered, which helps to shape it into more of a heart shape (which most of us would envy for!).

Her messy bob also makes her low-lights stand out, but not on an over-the-top level, and it’s always great to show off two different shades of your hair in one go!

Her smokey eye make-up goes very well with the deep chocolate colour of her hair, and her rose-shaded lipstick makes her look a lot more seductive and glamorous.

Jessica Alba:

Jessica’s Long Inverted Bob Hairstyle is an absolute classic; it is a very simple hairstyle, complimenting a simple look, and she still looks stunning!

With minimal make-up, she manages to grab everyone’s attention to her hair, which makes her look sophisticated yet alluring. Her use of a glossy, sparkly lip-gloss of a pinky shade is the key to the touch of glamour to her fashionable look.

Jessica’s hair is poker-straight, which makes her look tidy and professional, as well as adding elements of power to her overall look.

The ‘Bob’ trend is getting hotter and hotter this autumn, so it’s not too late to jump on the wagon!

The Almost Beiber

Saturday, October 1st, 2011

Every month we try to tempt you boys into embracing a new style and this month is no different. For some blokes the sophisticated style works well, for others it’s a shaved look which has the women swooning, but for one teen sensation in particular it is a sweeping fringe and natural highlights which has millions of girls screaming his name. I am of course talking about none other than Disney boy hero Justin Beiber.

Since Justin’s epic rise to fame his hair style has become somewhat iconic and although Beiber does look quite cute and clean cut we wouldn’t suggest that any grown men try this style.

And so I bring you the ‘Almost-Beiber’

The fringe on this look is a lot more subtle and manly than that of the Beib, but the long sides and subtle highlights still keep the same influences alive. This is the perfect look for anyone in their twenties – thirties who wants to keep their hair fashionable without being accused of following a teen sensation, which we can appreciate is not the coolest of things!

A key product for achieving this look is wax or clay putty, in a similar way to creating a bed head style you need to work the putty between your palms and then tussle it through your fringe.

Note: This look will not work for you if you have a receding hairline or particularly round face.

It is however perfect if you have a slight stubble as pictured above as this adds a real manliness to a style which could be defined as feminine.

MTV Awards 2011- Celebrity hair

Friday, September 2nd, 2011

Written by Susmi Patel

As always, our favourite celebrities dazzled at the MTV Awards this year. Not only did Beyonce announce her long-awaited pregnancy, but the female stars at this year’s awards, also sported the best of the latest hair trends.

Beyonce

Labeled as the trend of the evening, Beyonce sported a simple side ponytail, which really goes with her make-up.

Her choice of wearing a pink/nude lip-gloss shade with minimal eye make-up was a good one, as the simplicity of her look allows her lovely ombre’d hair to be a focal point.

Ombre hair was a hot trend of the summer, but it looks like Beyonce has just continued it into autumn. By putting her ombre’d hair in a side ponytail, not only is Beyonce showing off the colours of her roots and tips without the look being too full-on, but her skin looks incredibly glowing and radiant!

She adds the perfect finishing touch to her simple look- long, shiny silver earrings! The earrings add a touch of glamour to her look, and allow her to amazingly dazzle in front of the press!

Adele

Adele showed the world that she had the ‘Wow’ hair factor when she arrived at the MTV Awards sporting a big hairstyle.

The big hairstyle adds a striking touch of femininity to Adele’s chic look, and by adding a few curls- it’s the perfect finishing touch that also shapes her face!

Adele’s long lashes and bold eyeliner goes well with the clear lip-gloss that she is wearing as the colour on her face is balanced out, hence attracting heaps of attention to her big hairstyle. Her simple outfit also helps to grab out attention too!

Kim Kardashian

With lovely long sleek locks like Kim Kardashian, the possibilities of which hairstyle to flourish are endless!

Although Kim goes with a simple hairstyle, she still looks absolutely stunning. Kim’s hair worn down on both sides makes her overall look a lot sexier- it shapes her face, and goes very well with her smokey eye make-up.

Kim’s use of black eyeliner draws attention to her deep brown eyes, which also complements her glossy black hair.

Her long black hair adds a touch of sexiness, glamour, and power to her look.

Kim has always been a person to pull the smokey, sultry look at its best, and she didn’t let us down here!

We’ve seen how our favourite celebs have styled their hair for the awards, how would you have styled your hair? Pop your comments in the box below!

Hair Q&A

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

Do you have any tips for livening up shoulder length hair? I recently had my long hair trimmed because I was bored with the style, but now I’m struggling to be imaginative with my shorter hair and I always end up looking the same.

Ive been toying with the idea of getting a fringe for a while now, but I’m not sure it will suit me. Could you tell me what face shapes look best with which sort of fringe?
Well if you are very unsure, the one frindge which suits most face shapes would be the side frindge. A full fringe on the other hand would mostly suit oval face shapes, although if you are unsure, I would recomend for you to start with a thin fringe with soft longer sides, if you like it just keep adding more thickness and sharpness to it slowly.

Bed Head

Monday, August 8th, 2011

A trend which has long since been a firm favourite in female hair is now breaking into the male market too.

And you’ll love how effortless it is to recreate.

This summer the look the ladies will love is a messy, dishevelled, bed head style. Perfect for the busy man because it can take mere seconds to achieve!

This look is SO easy to replicate, especially if you have longer hair to start off with, it’s almost as simple as rolling out of bed and running wax through your hair to keep it in that messy place.

However if you have shorter hair which doesn’t naturally have that tussled style, then get some styling wax (The Vo5 range is perfect for creating this look) rub a small amount between your palms and then simple mess your hair up with your waxy hands. The benefits of wax over gel are all about the texture and feel of the hair, wax isn’t as heavy as gel so your hair will keep its lightness. So, provided you don’t go overboard and use too much, wax won’t make hair look greasy as gel can often do.

Sticking to a messy style such as this is great for whatever life throws at you too. If it rains, or is windy, or you fall asleep on the tube, the look will still be there. Simply ruffle yourself up and start again. Perfect for the modern, low maintenance man.

There’s something very natural and masculine about this look which, coupled with a confident aura will have women falling at your feet. I recently asked a male friend to attempt the style and he said that there’s something really cool about moulding the hair with just your bare hands. Very back to basics and macho…whether he’s thinking too deeply about the whole thing is yet to be seen, why not let us know your thoughts on the topic?
